Ohio State Launches Ohio Scholarship Challenge

The Ohio State University has begun a new fund-raising campaign to support students from all 88 Ohio counties. The "Ohio Scholarship Challenge" seeks to raise $100 million in general undergraduate scholarship funds for Ohio State students at all campuses. This Challenge is also part of the university’s larger effort to raise $500 million in private funds for student financial aid and scholarships. The Ohio Scholarship Challenge honorary co-chairs are Ohio State head football Coach Urban Meyer and men’s basketball Coach Thad Matta.

The Challenge will create a full-tuition endowed scholarship in each county and raise current use scholarship dollars. Unlike many other scholarships, those funded by the Challenge are transferrable between majors and portable between campuses. This enables a recipient to keep the scholarship regardless of major or campus attended. Scholarships are also renewable for up to four years as long as the student remains in good standing at Ohio State.

Through the Challenge, the university seeks individuals, organizations and groups to donate and/or raise undergraduate scholarship funds for students from their area. Gifts may be given as current-use or endowed scholarships. As an incentive through the But for Ohio State campaign, the university will match the new endowment payout for four years for donors who accept the Challenge. Donors can determine the scholarship name, designate a scholarship to benefit students based on need or merit or both, and designate a scholarship to benefit a geographic area (e.g. high school, county, city, or region).

Anyone can make a tax-deductible contribution in any amount by visiting www.giveto.osu.edu/challenge.

More information is also available via the Ohio State Office of Academic Affairs development team at 614-247-6600. Jodi Bopp is the senior director of philanthropy (bopp.12@osu.edu).
Pastures for Profit is a comprehensive management intensive grazing school offered annually throughout Ohio by the Ohio State University Extension Forage Team. The Team consists of members from OSU Extension, the OSU Department of Horticulture and Crop Sciences, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

The following 30 to 45 minute presentations were recorded live in mp4 format during a Pastures for Profit grazing school offered in April of 2012. Even on a high speed connection they may each take 3 to 4 minutes to load, but then should play flawlessly on your desktop, laptop, iPad and most phones.

There is a good chance that many of you will be inspected for the Workers Protected Standards (WPS) program. Some of the issues you will be expected to have ready are: 1.) Safety posters with proper information at the bottom. 2.) Proper training for handlers and workers (documented) every 5 years. 3.) MSDS and label books on record. 4.) Cleanup areas, disposable suits or wash machines and lockers for handlers. 5.) Field posting and central posting areas that are up to date. 6.) Inventory of products. 7.) Spray records with all 8 areas of information filled in. 8.) A coordinator for your business. 9.) Greenhouse posting system. 10.) Proper personnel protective equipment. 11.) Cleanup station for workers 1/4 miles or further from your buildings (clean water, single use towels and soap). 12.) Communication records for applicators using danger use products every 3 hours.

Ready to start your own salsa business but need a really big kitchen? A local committee is conducting a needs survey to receive input from any small business owner or agricultural producer who is interested in using a shared commercial kitchen.

A shared teaching kitchen like this could be seen in Northeast Ohio some day.

Ready to start your own salsa business but need a really big kitchen? The City of Geneva is pleased to announce its partnership with David Marrison, Ohio State University Extension, Ashtabula, Maurine Orndorff, Agricultural Programs Technician, Lake County Soil & Water Conservation District, local growers and the Lake Local Food Initiative to create a shared-use commercial kitchen for the region. A shared-use commercial kitchen facility enables small or budding food-product businesses to share production space, machinery and knowledge to develop their products – like salsa, sauces, pickles, vinegars -- for public distribution and consumption.

Though Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga County's strong agricultural underpinnings lend easily to distributable food production, small or new businesses often face overwhelming start-up or operational costs that act as a barrier to growth. The partnership was formed to remove that barrier and open opportunities to new and existing food-product businesses. The partnership believes that a shared-use commercial kitchen could be used to help new food-related businesses in critical functions, including enabling product development and sharing marketing strategies and business plans. Users can include vegetable growers, fruit growers, meat processors, cheese makers, grape growers, caterers, chefs and cooks. Agricultural producers can increase their bottom line by creating and marketing higher value products.

There are currently no licensed commercial or business incubating kitchens in Northeast Ohio. A Shared Commercial Kitchen in Northeast Ohio would help to improve the sustainability of local food producers, develop new entrepreneurship businesses and make locally grown food available year around.

Interested? The partners hope that anyone interested in taking advantage of a shared-use commercial kitchen will participate in a short survey. The survey is designed to understand the interest level and potential uses from producers, entrepreneurs, restaurants, companies and organizations that might be prospective tenants of the proposed facility.

The completed survey may be mailed to Jennifer Brown at City of Geneva, 44 N. Forest St., Geneva OH 44041 or faxed to Jennifer at 440-466-5027, or emailed: asstcitymgr@genevaohio.com.
